Amara pranced down the stairs with a book in her hand, her black hair swaying from side to side. The mansion seemed to be completely empty, except for the large number of students that she knew were present. She reached the foot of the stairs and looked around. "Where should I go?" she whispered to herself. She made a beeline for the Lounge. Hopefully no-one was in there, so she could get some history reading done.
She opened the large brown door and walked inside. Sure enough, no-one was down here. The glow of the fire and the lamp light seemed inviting in the darkness of the night. She had left Kitty in their room so she could get some sleep. Amara found one of the most comfortable chairs and fell back into it, pulling her feet up onto the chair. She opened her book and began to read.

Another nightmare of the tragic death of her parents had caused Petra to stir from her slumber. Images of that night continued to flash through her mind meaning going back to sleep would be impossible now. Pushing the bedclothes off her, Petra stepped on the cold ground below causing a shiver to run through her body. Searching under her bed she pulled out her slippers and slipped them on, boy were these comfortable. Petra smiled contently and quietly exited her dorm, making sure she did not disturb any of her roomies.
As she wandered down the large staircase, the crackling sound of the burning wood on the fire caught her attention and she strolled into the Lounge. "Oh, sorry, did you want to be alone?" Petra asked as she spotted Amara in the chair. Petra understood all too well that people needed their space, if she wanted to be alone Petra would respect her and leave, afterall, there were tonnes of other rooms to sit in.

Amara had just gotten to one of the best chapters when the sound of a female voice spooked her from the complete silence. Amara clasped her hand to her chest. "Oh my! You frightened the life out of me" Amara laughed, closing her book and placing it on the arm rest next to her. "No, no, not at all! Come sit. It's really warm here! Heaven!" Amara said, rubbing her hands towards the fire.
She stood up to greet the woman. "I'm Amara" she said, smiling, her open hand outstretched towards Petra.

Petra chucked as the girl jumped from her skin and began to apologise. "I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to startle you" she smiled, strolling towards the girl and shaking the greeted hand. "Nice to meet you Amara, I'm Petra. I'm kind of new here, that's probably why we've never met" she explained as she she took a seat near the warmth of the fire. "God, it's so cold up in those dorms, they really need to modernise and bring in some central heating" she laughed, gazing out of the window into the darkness of the night. After awaking she had looked on her clock which had read 4:06am, which meant 3 more hours until everyone was up. She began to wonder why the girl was up this late, did she also have a nightmare? "How come your downstairs so late? Can't sleep?" she asked, smiling contently as the fire continued to give her heat.

Amara sat back down as Petra seated. "It's nice to meet you! I'm quite new here too as well" she said, lifting her feet onto the armchair. "They really do need central heating! I swear icicles are leaking from our shower" Amara giggled. "Yeah, just couldn't sleep. It just feels really odd to be here. Well, at least for the time being" she said, rubbing her feet, warming them up.
"What are you doing down here so late?" Amara asked in return.

Petra had been a member of the X-Men for only a few months and still she had made only a couple of friends, not even that, aqquantices you could say. Petra had been a very anti-social sort of girl, what with living on the streets and being in a care home. However, being at the Mansion required her to socialise, however difficult it may have been.
Petra laughed aloud at the icicle comment, as much as it was a joke it was probably the truth, this place was ancient. "I know the feeling all to well, it's the same with me, just couldn't sleep" she sighed, deciding not to tell her about the nightmares.
"So, I'm guessing you have a power, otherwise you wouldn't be here" she said, intrigued to find out more about the girl who sat opposite. "Do you have one of those silly codenames?" she asked, soon after revealing her own. "I decided to go with Quake, I understand you can guess what my power is." she smirked. "So, what's yours?"

"Well, mine kind of gives it away too. But, part of our powers are similar" Amara said. She was uite excited. Someone she could talk earthquakes and tremors with, and just general power information. "My codename is Magma" she said. "I know right! Now it's really obvious what I do" she giggled again. "I can pretty much control magma and lava, control earthquakes, psionically throw balls of molten rock at people, which I must say is quite fun... And recently, I learned that I could turn into a fiery, magma like form! Cool, yeah?" she said, looking bright eyed at Petra.
She had been feeling more upbeat about her powers since sharing a room with Kitty, and also spending more time at the institute. "So Petra, what is your story? Unless, you don't want to tell me... which is perfectly fine" Amara said, grinning at the girl.

Magma. How original. She was obviously some sort of fire/lava manipulator and that was soon confirmed by the girl. "Wow, they are some pretty awesome powers!" Petra said, genuinely interested in what abilities the mutant gene had given her. "You can turn yourself into a magma form?!" Petra replied, a little surprised, she had never witnessed anything of this sort before. She wondered how it worked, if her skin had errupted into flames, now that would be cool.
When the girl asked about her story, Petra's barrier immediately came up. Her life before the institute had been private and she wanted to keep it that way. The fact she had killed her parents with an accidental rockslide, spent her childhood in a out of foster homes and commiting petty crimes to survive was not something to be shared, only Emma Frost knew of her shady background. "My story's nothing to write home about" she lied, hoping the girl didn't see through it. "My parent's didn't like the fact that I was a mutant so they sent to me the Institute, that's it." she smiled. "So, what about you Amara. Anything interesting happen to you prior to coming here?" she questioned, hoping to drive the consersation away from herself.

Amara listened as Petra gave her an extremely short story. "Most people's stories are like that. Parents not liking the whole mutation thing" she replied, believing Petra story. Petra then asked her of her own story. She was the daughter of a Senator in a culturally 'behind-the-times' civilisation, and she was to be sacrificed, so she was sent away, disguised as an Indian.
She had never really known much of her father, because of being sent away at a young age. Sometimes she wondered what he looked like. "Pretty much the same. Parents didn't agree of the mutant factor" Amara replied.

Petra nodded, it seemed that every mutant was here because of their parents. They just couldn't accept the fact their child was different, it was quite sad actually. Petra's parents hadn't even known she carried the mutant gene, they had died too soon to find out. Perhaps they would have accepted Petra for who she was and it would all be different, oh how she dreamed.
After her meeting with Magneto he had told her that her parents would have ended up disowning her and she soon concluded he was probably right. Intrigued by this man and wanting to know more, Petra soon changed the subject. "So, have you ever heard of the Brotherhood?" she asked, interested to know more. "Are they really that bad?"

Amara looked into the fire, remembering her encounter with Pyro. She drifted away from her reality and remembered back to the fight. She quickly snapped out of it when she heard Petra talking about the Brothehood. "What?" she asked quickly. "Of course the Brotherhood are bad! Take today for example. I saw Pyro in the mall and he decided to wreak some havoc on unsuspecting humans!" Magma said, looking at Petra.
"They are always doing stuff like that to the public. That Magneto... What an... awful man" she said, pausing to make sure she didn't use and bad language.
